Liberty HealthShare believes its members are more than a number. The healthsharing ministry emphasizes personal relationships, prayer, and compassionate support while facilitating the sharing of eligible medical bills among its community.
Staffers, from Chief Executive Officer Dorsey Morrow to customer service representatives, pause their workday every Friday to pray for members facing health challenges.
“Whether it’s with the member or for the member, we are about prayer. We strongly believe in that here,” Morrow explains.
A Member-Focused Alternative
Liberty HealthShare rejects the trend toward automated healthcare systems. The ministry employs approximately 165 dedicated team members, including on-staff nurses, who guide members through healthcare decisions with expertise and empathy.
“We honestly and sincerely want to cater to our members and help them navigate their healthcare journey because there are providers out there that are difficult to work with or who are not going to be transparent in talking to you,” Morrow points out.
New members receive comprehensive orientation materials. “You can expect a lot of communication from us, a lot of resources,” Morrow states. “The first year, you’re probably going to be inundated with emails and communications and videos. How do you do this? How do you do that?”
Transparency Builds Trust
Liberty HealthShare builds relationships through honesty. “We do what we say, and we say what we will do,” Morrow emphasizes. “Anything and everything you want to know about Liberty HealthShare, you can go to our website. You’ll see we are an open book. You can find our Form 990. You can find our guidelines. You can find our audit report.”
The ministry maintains multiple vendors who negotiate with medical providers. “We’ve got three or four various vendors, and each of them have a very specific task and help us identify problem areas,” Morrow explains.
Real Flexibility For Real People
Liberty HealthShare recognizes that healthcare needs vary widely. “There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to healthcare,” Morrow says. The ministry offers six different sharing programs, and a supplemental dental sharing program, to accommodate diverse situations.
Members have the freedom to select providers. “We do participate in a network, one of the largest in the country, which helps our members control costs, but you’re not obligated to use it,” Morrow mentions.
The ministry allows members to join or leave without annual commitment periods. “You can join our membership, and if you determine it doesn’t work for you, you’re not locked into it,” Morrow notes. “You’re free to move to another program, another ministry, or some other option.”
Compassion When Members Need It Most
Liberty HealthShare demonstrates exceptional care during difficult situations. Recently, a senior who transitioned to Medicare faced substantial medical bills due to confusion about coordinating between systems.
Liberty HealthShare staff worked with their vendors to reprice her bills. Members shared eligible medical expenses, and dedicated employees guided her through the proper program setup to prevent future issues.
“We worked with her so that she wasn’t left in what should be her golden years dealing with some sizable medical debt,” Morrow recalls.
This personalized approach reflects the ministry’s fundamental values. “Our focus at Liberty HealthShare is on our members,” Morrow informs. “We are here to help facilitate sharing between our members. We are not driven by profit.”
Listening to Member Needs
Liberty HealthShare conducts surveys every six months to assess needs and satisfaction. These surveys lead directly to program improvements and new offerings.
The ministry’s dental sharing program emerged from these suggestions. Liberty HealthShare values feedback and continuously refines its operations based on member input.
“We want to have that constant reevaluation, constant look at the programs that we offer, how we do it, what we’re doing, how we’re servicing our members,” Morrow comments. “What can we do to make it better, cheaper, faster?”
Creating Community Despite Distance
Liberty HealthShare fosters connections among people who may never meet face-to-face. Through a personalized online resource called ShareBox, participants track how their contributions help others.
“All of our members can sign in through their sharing portal. They can see who their contributions have helped through their membership,” Morrow describes. “We also encourage members to submit prayers to encourage a supportive community.”
Brenna Ortner described her experience with Liberty HealthShare as “such a breath of fresh air,” complimenting ShareBox for being “easy to use to submit bills” and “send in questions.”
Healthcare Reimagined
Liberty HealthShare encourages members to take an active role in their healthcare decisions. The ministry believes that engaged patients ask important questions about costs and treatment options, ultimately improving healthcare quality while reducing expenses.
“America basically has turned financing healthcare and taking responsibility for their healthcare on autopilot,” Morrow observes. “If we were to all start taking an active part of understanding what service is being delivered, and getting in and understanding and challenging some of the decisions that are being made, including what they’re being charged and why, I think we can make a significant difference in our healthcare system.”
