The power demand in the United States is growing rapidly, reaching an all-time high this year and continuing to increase. Experts predict that the power demand in the next 25 years will be a staggering 50% higher than today’s numbers. A main driver behind this is the rise of artificial intelligence. AI data centers are guzzling energy and sites are multiplying, with AI leader NVIDIA planning to ship 1.5 million AI server units annually by 2027.
America’s aging power grid is increasing the stress that the country is experiencing during this AI boom. Most of the US’ power grid is between 40 and 70 years old, meaning that it is more costly and inefficient to run these high powered centers, not to mention running other key departments that require electricity. Transportation, industrial, residential and commercial power are also important to the operations of the United States, putting added stress to an already outdated system.
Improving this infrastructure will be costly and time consuming, but is a leading solution to keeping up with the demand for power. Experts are also suggesting exploring alternative power sources and turning to US based suppliers to improve lead times on new infrastructure equipment. There is no doubt that the future is electric, so long as the US is able to match its pace and adapt to growing needs of people and businesses.
