It is 5 a.m. and you are trying to motivate yourself to get out of bed to go to the gym before a long day at work. You know it is the right thing to do. You know that later in the day, you will regret not exercising. As you lay there, warm and snuggly, tucked under your blankets, the idea of sweating it out on the elliptical is far from inviting. Then your phone beeps with a text. It is your workout friend with the quip “Rise and shine. See you in 15.” You let out a groan and drag yourself up from bed. You throw on your workout clothes, lace up your sneakers and head out the door. It is a lot harder to let down a friend, than it is to let down yourself.

The side effects of maximizing calorie expenditure while improving fitness are an added bonus. However, fueling extreme activities requires a careful understanding of the body’s metabolism and learning what happens when the fuel in your tank runs out too soon.
